Hiking - Asheville/Black Mountain
Take A Hike
We are new to the area and are still in the first stages of discovering all the wonderful trails in the area. So we are still in the process of developing this page. We are including scenic walks as well as hikes.
Due to bad knees, we will mostly likely stay on trails that are easy to moderate.
Please reach out to us and let us know about trails that you would like to share with our audience.
Local Path/Stream
If you enjoy a great morning walk, you will love the walk we recently discovered that starts right at the house.
Walking through the back gate of Sweet Birch Commons, turn right onto Meadow Brook Dr. It's a quick walk through this gorgeous neighborhood. Make a left onto Dogwood Ln, cross over the little bridge and you will see the path and stream. It takes about 8 minutes to get to this point.
The path follows the stream for about 12 minutes until it ends at a road. You will have to walk on a few rocks to cross the stream.
All in all, it's about a 40 minute round trip stroll along the stream.
Lake Tomahawk
Black Mountain - 5 minute drive from BMS
Lake Tomahawk Park provides users a place to play, walk, swim, gather, commune and relax within a 16.3-acre parcel located centrally in Black Mountain.
The path around the lake is only about 1/2 mile, but you certainly won't get board doing multiple laps. You can also continue your walk on the adjacent golf course when the course is not in use.
Buffalo Creek Trail
This trail is located in Lake Lure
The Blue trail is a 3.5 mile loop. Took us about 2 hours taking a few stops. Going counter-clock wise the first 45 minutes was steep enough to feel the pain a bit. It then flattened out for the next 45 minutes. At about 2.5 miles there is choice to cut out the last mile and go directly to the trail head. If you continue on the outter loop, the trail does go uphill again. There is a Red trail that is much longer.
We should also note that the driving to the trail or Lake Lure in general, is quite a winding and bending road. If someone in your group is prone to getting car sick, this might not be the trail for them.
Linville Falls
This trail is located in Marion, NC
Perhaps the most popular Water Falls in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Trail has three tiers to view the falls. 90% of the trail is easy, but to get to the best viewing areas of the falls, you have to go up/down a series of vertical steps. The trails is about a 1.5 mile round trip if you seek out all the viewing areas. It's about a 45 minute drive from the house, so it's worth it to hang out and just soak in the views of the falls. The hike itself is probably not worth the drive.
Lookout Mountain
This trail is located in Montreat, NC
Montreat is located about 10-15 minutes from the house. There are several trails located in this area. To date, we have only hiked up the Lookout trail. It's short but has some steep areas that will get your heart pumping. To summit the trail, you have to climb about 50' of rocks. On our hike, we were told that there were a couple of Copperhead snakes sunning up there, so we decided not to climb the rocks. We also saw a bear foraging a bit down the slope from the trail, but he didn't pay any attention to us.
